The Ancient Flame: Dante and the Poets

Ordering information

by Winthrop Wetherbee

The William and Katherine Devers
Series in Dante Studies, Volume 9

Winthrop Wetherbee's new study of Dante's relationship to the classical Latin poets—Virgil, Ovid, Lucan, Statius—is a tour-de-force. Although other scholars have offered valuable insights into the literary relationship established by Dante with Virgil or Ovid—less so with Lucan or Statius—none have considered the role that all four poets played in the composition of Dante's Commedia. Wetherbee provides an indispensable tool for teaching Dante's Commedia and a firm basis for new research in this field of studies.

This volume has an anticipated publication date of February 2008.

WINTHROP WETHERBEE is emeritus professor of English and Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.
